Featured Work

A lens into my interdisciplinary art practice.
 
My studio practice is both interdisciplinary and conceptual, where the work
takes on diverse forms as a result of the contextual, the analytical, and the
historical underpinnings of the work. Primarily, I find my work dancing between
the realms of photography,mixed-media, new and interactive media, and installation.
 
Educational Landscape series, 2014

 

The Educational Landscape series explores the ways in which educational institutions not only teach us about learning but also enlighten us about the ways of society, the presence of inequalities, and the hope for transformation. Educational institutions are often marked by their surroundings and their topographical landscapes frame student learning in different ways. Each image in the series speaks metaphorically to the ways in which institutions function, and to our own initiative as learners to gain knowledge and surrender.

In Blonde(d) Out, I used online interactive media published on popular beauty publication websites, which allows consumes to make "instant makeovers" of themeselves, to speak about mythical norms and complicated standards of beauty for African American women.

In Blonde(d) Out, I used online interactive media published on popular beauty publication websites, which allows consumes to make "instant makeovers" of themeselves, to speak about mythical norms and complicated standards of beauty for African American women.

Nombre Diversity: A collaborative project with artist Lauren Cross, 2010

 

In the site-specific work, Nombre Diversity, I was inspired by the stories and experiences of Holliston High School students, and aimed to explore the ways in which diversity is defined in educational environments.

 

A Colored Magazine Frenzy, 2010


Colored Essentials and People You Tell Us! are from a series of works created while working in the publishing industry. I was fascinated by the ways in which magazines shape culture, particularly African American culture.

 

After doing extensive research on colorism and its implications within African American culture, I created these works as interventions into dominant and subjugate narratives.

Colored Identity (Brown Bag Special series), 2008-2010

 

Series of mixed-media drawings and iterations on brown paper bags, referencing the "brown paper bag test, colorism, and beauty ideals within the African American community.

Modeled in Art History series, 2009
Series inspired by classical art featuring
black women throughout history. The work addresses the complexity of black identities in early American art, which are largely based on appearance and what they mean within contemporary society.
